sometimes you have to look for a spot of happiness on a bottle of poison
eating away at the memories
cluttering the mind full of soot
ratcheting the false hopes of tomorrow onto the ideals of today
looking for the answer in a pack of cigarettes
washing the forest with flames of the past
taking away the future

sometimes you have to look for a spot of hope on the back of a dumpster
and sometimes you have to wander to know
what anything really is
the day slips left behinds and crushed
dreams empty and forgotten
sleepiness overcomes
and the sun shoots rays into your eyes

sometimes you have to look for a spot of despair in a rainbow
all the colors melt together into an infinite mess of shadow
circles taking the place of squares in the middle of the dusk
and how do we know anything at all
washing yourself clean of thoughts of yesterday
wiping your face off with rust
howling at nothing but meaning every note

sometimes you have to look for things where they do not belong
and then sometimes you find the things that do
and when the wind is blowing in your direction
the sweeping motions of the tide will carry you out
back to the sea of life where we were all given birth
and someday we will all see
the things that were meant to be seen
all along
